On July 20, 2024, patients who underwent free surgeries converged at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi for a follow-up review, a customary practice of the Cleft & Facial Deformity Foundation (CFDF) since its inception in 2011. This review process allows doctors to assess the patients’ progress, provide further instructions, and distribute histology reports.
The event was a joyous occasion for both the medical team and patients, highlighting the remarkable improvements in the patients’ conditions and fostering a sense of community among those who shared similar experiences.
Dr. Seidu Bello, Executive Director and Lead Surgeon of CFDF, addressed the gathering, expressing delight at the significant progress made by the patients. He emphasized that each patient’s healing journey is unique due to different types of tumors and encouraged patients not to compare their recovery with others. Dr. Bello also acknowledged that while some tumors may recur, the reasons for recurrence are not fully scientifically understood.
Following the address, patients’ histology results were presented, and the review process began. Each patient was assessed individually, allowing for a thorough examination of their progress. Patients were encouraged to voice any questions or concerns, ensuring their experiences and needs were addressed.
Parents expressed heartfelt gratitude to the foundation for providing their children with a second chance at life. The atmosphere was filled with positivity and hope as everyone celebrated the successful outcomes of the surgeries. Patients shared personal stories of struggle and triumph.
One patient Gregory John, who underwent complex tumor removal surgery, beamed with pride as he showed off his newfound mobility. Another patient’s family expressed joy at seeing their child return to school and resume normal activities.
As the review concluded, patients and their families bid warm goodbyes, leaving with renewed spirits and optimism for the future. The event showcased not only the success of the surgeries but also the supportive community fostered by the foundation.
A total of 25patients, constituting 60% of the patients operated during the free surgery program , attended the review process, marking a significant improvement from the average attendance of 40% in previous exercises.
