The West African College of Surgeons held their 60th annual general meeting and scientific conference from 9th – 15th of February 2020, at Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. At the event, a member of Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation (CFDF), Nigeria, Olayemi Balogun presented an excellent lecture on SPEECH THERAPY IN COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE
Olayemi Balogun (RN, RM, DPN,BNSC) during her presentation described speech therapy in cleft patient as the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders by identifying the cause of the impairments. She described her experience with the people, patients and other speech therapists met during a training in Ghana to be warm and hospitable.
She identified the major challenge of speech therapy in comprehensive management of cleft in Nigeria as language barrier, financial constraint, lack of awareness and lack of strong structure for speech therapy. In her speech, she suggested an improvement and the active involvement of local government chairmen, state governments, distinguished senators, federal government, philanthropists in the implementation of annual speech therapy camps.
At the end of the presentation she was applauded by all present at the event; they described her presentation as a devise in solving some of the major challenges identified during speech therapy management of cleft patients all over West Africa Sub-region.
