A 13 year old girl with 12 extra teeth get reprieve in Iwere Ile, Oke-Ogun in Oyo State.
Adedokun Florence (not real name), a 13 year old JSS 2 student presented with a shocking appearance of multiple teeth at the maternity centre, venue of the free dental service carried out in Oke-ogun recently. This is part of the free dental services carried out by Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation in the 10 local government areas of Oke-ogun Oyo state.
Adedokun Florence hailed from Gbogi compound in Ilaji-ile in iwajowa local government area of oke ogun. According to professionals, 12 extra teeth were found in Florence mouth. Dr Osaro Eke, the dentists in charge stated that these teeth are referred to as retained deciduous teeth. He however acknowledged that Florence’s presentation is rare because the common occurrence of such teeth are usually from 1-3. Timothy (not Real name), the elder brother of Florence had a different story.
According to him, the multiple teeth referred to as ‘Adipele’ usually occur as a result of somebody cutting yam in the mouth. This traditional belief was corroborated by Pa Ogunkunle, a community leader, as a common belief in the environment. However Dr Osaro dismissed this belief as a pure superstition.
The young girl has since been relieved of the abnormality as 12 extra and abnormal teeth were extracted during the free surgery Program. Also, Dr Seidu Bello, the director of the foundation and also an Oke-ogun born dentist promised that effort will be made to follow up on the development of the young girl.
